LEAGUE RULES

Rules for determining number of points scored per match

- You get one point for turning up

- One point for winning a game

- One point for winning the match

Hence 3-0 becomes 5-1

3-1 becomes 5-2

3-2 becomes 5-3

- A walkover is 4-0

Unfinished games

You don't get the point for winning the match. Hence 2-1 becomes 3-2 and 2-2 becomes 3-3, etc…

Rules for determining new league positions

The first 5 divisions each contain 4 players.

The other divisions each contain 5 players if the total membership is a multiple of 5. Otherwise the last division may contain 6 players or the last one, two or three may contain 4 players.

Within each division each player is ranked according to his or her total score.

If two players have equal scores the one who has played more matches is given the higher rank.

If they have played an equal number of matches and A beat B then A is given a higher rank.

If A didn't play B the one with the smaller number of points against is given the higher rank.

If there is no way of separating them using the above rules the one who at present has the higher rank keeps it.

The membership of the divisions is rearranged as follows:

The three highest ranked in Division 1 remain in Division 1.

For Divisions 2 to 6 the highest ranked is promoted by one division to become the lowest ranked in that division.

For Divisions 1 to 5 the lowest ranked is demoted by one division to become the highest ranked in that division.

For each other division the two highest ranked are promoted by one division and, except for the last division, the two lowest ranked are demoted by one division.

The membership of the divisions is then adjusted after allowing for deletions and new entries.

Players are then deleted as follows:

a) Those who requested to be deleted are deleted.

b) Those who did not play any games and have not given any explanation are deleted

c) Those who have written injured are deleted unless they have specifically requested to be included next time.

d) Those who have not played any games for whatever reason and have not specifically requested to be included next time are deleted.

Players wishing to re-enter or enter for the first time are inserted at positions appropriate to their known ability. This part of the procedure is subject to error, especially with new members. New members are asked to play several league players before requesting entry and to ask for a realistic position.

Finally, the league membership is then ranked and the first 5 divisions formed of 4 players each. Players ranked 21 and lower form divisions of 5 players each. However, the final divisions may have 4 or 6 players.

Note that you can win your division and not be promoted (or even demoted) if the number of new players entering above you exceed those deleted. However, you will be playing people who were in a higher division than you last time.
